Columbia University was founded in 1754 and named King’s College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. Before the institution was established, there was controversy over where the university building would be erected and what religion it will be affiliated to. It was later decided that the principles of religious liberty should be adopted in establishing the school. Samuel Johnson held the first class in 1754 with only eight students in attendance. The class was held in a new school house adjacent Trinity church located on what is now popularly called lower Broadway in Manhattan. In 1776,the school was closed down because of the American revolution which lasted for eight good years. It reopened again in 1784 with a new name Columbia College. It has ever since then used the name and became one of the best universities in the world.
Columbia University is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The main entrance to the Morningside Heights campus is on 116th Street and Broadway, the Medical Center can be found at 168th Street and Broadway.
