The National University of Singapore (NUS) was officially established on 8 August 1980 through the merger of Nanyang University and the University of Singapore. However, the university’s origins can be traced to the founding of a medical school in 1905. The National University of Singapore (NUS) has undergone various institutional developments over the years to become a world-class university that is recognised as one of Asia’s best. The university aims to offer students an educational experience that is both global and Asian.1 NUS sees an annual enrolment of around 33,500 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It is the first and oldest institution in Singapore. It is ranked 11th best in the QS ranking worldwide. It is widely known because it provides research, entrepreneurship and educational approach globally making it one of the best in Asia.
National University of Singapore offer courses in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Computing and the School of Design and Environment. They also offer Architecture, Building and Real Estate, Engineering & Technology, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, among others which make it a total of 223 courses. They also offer postgraduate courses. NUS’s main campus is located in the southwestern part of Singapore, adjacent to Kent Ridge , accommodating an area of 150ha. The Duke-NUS Medical School , a postgraduate medical school which was jointly established with Duke University is located at the Outram campus,its Bukit Timah campus houses the Faculty of Law and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy ,the Yale-NUS College , a liberal arts college established in collaboration with Yale University, is located at University Town. They have 17 faculties across its three campuses. They also offer programs for students in order to enrich their knowledge. They assign projects to their students which are partially attended to while school is in session and fully executed during holidays. This makes their students among the best in the world.
The National University of Singapore has 8 libraries in total, namely: the Central Library, Chinese Library, CJ Koh Law Library, Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library, the Medical Library, Music Library, Science Library and East Asian Institute Library. The central library is a multi-disciplinary library serving all NUS staff and students and primarily those from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Computing and the School of Design and Environment. Its collection covers Architecture, Building and Real Estate, Engineering & Technology, Computer Science, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. There are millions of books in the libraries for each field of study. This is to aid learning and make research easier for students. With the library card. Students have access to books whenever there is need for one. Choosing the right book is made easy by the library staffs who are always on standby to help students.
The academic staff is made up of the Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, lecturer, Assistant Lecturer. They are all staffs with research experiences. Acceptance rate of students into the university is less than 7%. Students with less than 90% scores do not stand a chance of gaining admission into the school. Their graduate schools only accept students with 1st class honour and GPA of 4.0.Their graduates are one of the best in the world.
