Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut .In 1701,it was founded as the Collegiate School. It is one of the oldest institution of higher education in the United States ranking third. It is known to be one of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American revolution began. Its name was then changed to Yale College in the year 1718, serving as an honour to the school’s largest benefactor named Elihu Yale. The school was established by clergy to educate ministers from the congregation in 1701.This was chartered by Connecticut Colony. The school was moved to New Haven in 1716 and after that renamed as Yale College in recognition of a gift received from East India Company Governor, Elihu Yale.
Initially, studies was restricted to theology and sacred languages. Later on, courses like humanities and sciences were added. This was done during the American revolution. It awarded the first PhD in the United States in 1861 and finally became a university in 1887. During this time, the university was enlarged offering professional and graduate courses. When the physical campus and scientific research was expanded in 1890,the number of students and faculties increased.
Yale is organized into fourteen constituent schools, the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and twelve professional schools. While the university is governed by the Yale Corporation , each school’s faculty oversees its curriculum and degree programs. In addition to a central campus in downtown New Haven, the university owns athletic facilities in western New Haven, a campus in West Haven, Connecticut and forests and nature preserves throughout New England. It is famous for its excellent drama and music programs, which reach outside the classroom with student organizations such as the Yale Whiffenpoofs, a famous a cappella group, and the Yale Dramatic Association. The university’s assets include an endowment valued at $30.3 billion as of September 2019, making it the second largest endowment of any educational institution in North America. The Yale University Library , serving all its constituent schools, holds more than 15 million volumes of books and is rated as the third-largest academic library in the United States.
Yale College undergraduates follow a liberal arts curriculum with departmental majors and are organized into a social system of residential colleges . The institution has thousands of lecturers of different academic standards to teach and give instructions to students. Almost all members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and some members of other faculties teach undergraduate courses, more than 2,000 of which are offered annually. Students compete as the Yale Bulldogs in the NCAA Division I – Ivy League . As of October 2020, 65 Nobel laureates , 5 Fields Medalists and 3 Turing award winners have been affiliated with Yale University. In addition, Yale has graduated many notable alumni, including five U.S. Presidents, 19 U.S. Supreme Court Justices , 31 living billionaires and many heads of state . Hundreds of members of Congress and many U.S. diplomats , 78 MacArthur Fellows , 252 Rhodes Scholars ,122 Marshall Scholars , and nine Mitchell Scholars have been affiliated with the university. Less than 6.5% of applicants are admitted every year. This implies that only students with high GPA of more than 4.14 can only be considered for admission into the school.
